Our founder
For over 40 years now, Maxime Séguin has devoted most of his boundless energy to sharing his love of music.
When he was barely old enough to ride a bicycle, a neighbor of his family, who lived in Montérégie at the time, gave them a faded old upright piano. It was love at first sight; little Séguin was completely captivated by this bewitching machine, which gave him as much pleasure as those around him when he produced sounds from it. His path was then mapped out: he enrolled in private piano lessons and theory classes at the École de musique Vincent-d'Indy, went on to study the big-band option at André-Laurendeau high school, then jazz piano at Cégep Saint-Laurent, where he won first place in the inter-college competition.
At a very young age, Séguin was already an established jazz pianist when he entered McGill University's Bachelor's and Master's programs in jazz piano. The years of his early twenties were marked by exceptional effervescence: alongside his studies, he played in Montreal clubs, went on tour, played on cruise ships, lent his talents to the recording of three albums, composed music for documentaries, and participated three times in the Montreal Jazz Festival. Above all, he stays close to the music education scene, helping to set up Quebec's only "Jazz-Pop" music-study program, which was officially launched in 1997. Séguin devoted over fifteen years of teaching passion to the program, which still exists today.
Séguin's varied experiences teach him about the many facets of the complex phenomenon that is music. In other words, he understands that it's not just about playing it: it's also about learning it, transmitting it, cultivating it, financing it - not to mention developing and producing the instruments on which it depends, and delivering them to the musicians and institutions that need them to carry out their missions. It's this aspect of music that Séguin has set his sights on since 2012, the year in which he grandly inaugurates two branches of the new "Piano Vertu" boutique, one in Quebec City and the other in Montreal. The rapid success of this burgeoning business encouraged him to think ahead... literally. Four years after opening the Quebec boutiques, he and his then-wife founded the two branches of the ultra-high-end piano boutique "The Grand - Signature" in Jakarta, Indonesia. For two years, Séguin divided his life between his four boutiques, racking up an astronomical number of frequent flyer points!
Yet this frenetic pace, while exciting, was difficult to sustain over the long term. In 2018, Séguin decided to concentrate his resources and energies by orchestrating a lasting presence in Montreal. To celebrate the first decade of the "Piano Vertu" adventure, he embarked on a project as extraordinary as his love of music: the "Signature Vertu" space, a large piano showroom without equal in the country, located in the heritage building of the former Snowdon Theatre. Its official opening, on October 1, 2022, heralds a harmonious future for the company and its team, who share Séguin's enthusiasm at the height of his 6,000-plus piano sales!
